Smart Singer Musings
Smart Singer is an Attitude
A Smart Singer maintains a positive perspective and forward motion no matter the challenge.
AHHHHhhh. . . The Tongue :b
Most people don't think much about their tongues, but as singers they're often the bane of our existence.
Getting Set Straight
As singers, one of the oft skimmed over aspects of our training is POSTURE. As a culture I don't think we focus on posture the way we once did, and it shows.
EVERY kid is a singer . . . until someone tells them they’re NOT!
Every child is a singer, until someone tells them they’re not! Let’s all commit to letting go of “Pitch Shame”!
Before you throw stones. . .
You never know when some flippant comment made in the heat of the moment to prove that you're RIGHT might cause real and very lasting damage to someone else. Let us all *think* before we start throwing stones at one another.
So you got the role. . . NOW WHAT???
So you got the role. . . NOW WHAT?? How to systematically learn a role without losing your mind!
HOW TO learn a new song (without hyperventilating)
So your teacher gave you a new and difficult piece? In a foreign language? And you're not *quite* confident in note reading? First things first, DON'T PANIC and use your brain Smart Singers! Think systematically!
Say NO to #jawjam
Singers often translate directions like OPEN YOUR MOUTH to the extreme, creating all sorts of long term vocal issues.
My favorite . . .?
Regular exposure to grieving families reminds me that life is fleeting and we're asked to live fully in the present moment. None of us can know what will happen next, so digging into the here and now - living each moment as it comes - is our work.
Why “relax” makes me want to throw up.
OK...confession time. I absolutely DETEST the word "relax". This is probably due to the fact that when someone uses the word in my direction it's always been preceded by "Why can't you just...".
Say NO to pretty
I would invite us all to consider that pretty (or good) = BORING. One dimensional. Why not simply make noise and explore the awesome range and dynamic possibilities of the human voice?
I woke up this way. . .
I've been thinking a lot lately about how we must embrace and accept our whole selves and whole voices exactly as we are in order to grow.
Compare = Despair
The lesson of today is COMPARE = DESPAIR. As singers, we're constantly working toward excellence and growth, looking to to be the best we can be. It's very easy to fall into the trap of glancing around at others to see how we measure up.
