Getting Set Straight

As singers, one of the oft skimmed over aspects of our training is POSTURE. As a culture I don't think we focus on posture the way we once did, and it shows. From slouching in desks through years of school, to 'crashing on couches' to unconsciously protecting my body, my own posture has suffered greatly over the years. (Hello forward rolled shoulders) If I weren't a singer, constantly bringing awareness to my spine/ combating these ill effects on occasion, I can't imagine the shape I'd be in today. I do spend time in my studio helping students become aware of their posture, and I'm often surprised at how foreign good posture feels to most of us (and HOW important it is to quality vocal production). Recently, I was in a lot of pain caused by some out of place ribs. I've never really spent time with a chiropractor, but Dr. Steve Boutin of Boutin Chiropractic was recommended to me by a friend. I wasn't sure what to expect, but wonderfully, Dr. Boutin is an absolute GEEK about the spine and good postural health. Every once in a while we're blessed to come across a professional who also has the heart of an educator. Happily for me, this was the experience I had at Boutin Chiropractic. I loved Dr Steve's energy, enthusiasm, knowledge AND his willingness (read:Eagerness) to share it. He taught me some awesome stretches to help me keep myself healthy, along with some great tips on how to improve my posture. I was so excited to turn a visit with the chiropractor into a continuing education opportunity to help me become a better vocalist and better example to my students. As singers, we know it takes a village to keep us moving forward. I'm so glad to have Dr Steve on my team! Thanks for setting me straight!
