Compare = Despair
Good morning Smart Singers! The lesson of today is COMPARE = DESPAIR. As singers, we're constantly working toward excellence and growth, looking to to be the best we can be. It's very easy to fall into the trap of glancing around at others to see how we measure up. My experience is that this is never helpful. I had a poignant example of this with a student last week. The student came to me wanting to re-learn how to sing after a stroke a few years ago. They have bravely and patiently worked through physical challenges and have grown by leaps and bounds. We were working through their favorite song and I was bursting with joy at the rediscovered smooth tone and ease that they were able to find. After it was over, I said, "Well! Wasn't that FUN?!" The student sadly looked at me and explained that they "didn't sound as good as" the recording artist, and wondered if they should even sing it anymore. It absolutely broke my heart that this was the student's take away. It has made me reflect on the many times I've done the same thing and totally robbed myself of the joy of growth, discovery and making music. I challenge us all to keep our eyes on OURSELVES and to find joy in satisfaction in the small victories that come our way. #compareanddespair #growthmindset #singersofinstagram #singer #singing #singingteacher #voice #voicelessons #vocalist #vocalcoach #onlinelessons #keepsinging #keepgrowing #keepgoing #beasmartsinger
